ten top tips for great stand design

Fundamental to the success of a stand at any exhibition is its design. Your stand is your shop window and getting the look and feel of your stand right is key and with hundreds of visitors walking the show and lots of exhibitors, what will tempt them on to your stand?

A good stand designer will be able to help by asking the right questions about what you want to achieve at the show, what your branding is, your key message and products. They will want to explore all these things with you before they start designing

Here are 10 top tips so that you can be prepared when you approach a stand designer.

1. Branding

Your stand is your shop window, so it needs to reflect your brand and give the right message to visitors. What is your brand personality? Funky and modern, serious and traditional or innovative and edgy? Use corporate colours for furniture and carpeting as well as on the walls and displays and find different ways of positioning your logo.

2. Lighting

Use lighting to draw people’s attention to graphics or displays, make the stand feel bright and welcoming. Make sure your products are seen in the best light, that the lights aren’t too hot for visitors and that they don’t shine in people’s eyes

3. Digital

In today’s digital world, experiment with sound and screens. Use electronic presentations to grab attention and tell your story.

4. Graphics

Exhibition graphics are very different to graphics for online or print. Make sure there’s not too much small text to read and what there is is at eye level. Go for large hero images that can be seen from a distance and short punchy headlines.

5. Theme

Develop an eye-catching theme and then talk to your stand designer who can come up with ideas to meet your objectives

6. Easy access

Make your stand approachable and open. Don’t create barriers to entry or make it difficult for people to walk on to the stand. Always consider disabled access and think about the positioning of furniture, display stands for easy movement around the stand

7. Visitor journey

Consider the visitor journey round your stand – can it tell a story? Think about how your stand will work. There’s no point in having a kitchen area that is away from the tables and chairs. Do you really need a reception desk or will that just become a hub for sales staff to hover around. If you have a digital display, is there room for people to stand and watch it?

8. Avoid clutter

Less is more is very true for exhibition stands. Don’t take everything, just show new products or your best selling products. Leave space for people to walk around your stand rather than having to battle through a forest of display stands.

9. Catering

Are you going to provide refreshments and if so do you need a kitchen or are you going to have a café style bar? Will you have bartenders and baristas, use china or paper cups, offer food? Whatever you decide will need to be designed into your stand and will affect whether you need water and waste, electrical sockets and storage

10. Storage

Stand space is costly and yet you can never have too much storage on a stand. For literature and samples but also for bags and coats, having somewhere to store things will keep your stand tidy and your personal possessions secure.

A good stand is all about standing out and catching people’s attention at an exhibition and there is a lot of competition, so good design is essential.
